YouMail and 4INFO

Have you heard of YouMail?  It's a rather spiffy service that lets you customize the voicemail message on your cell phone by caller.  So if your grandma is calling from the old country, you can set it up so that when she calls, she hears a voicemail message from you in polish, just for her!  Or better yet, if you've got an ex who just hasn't taken the hint - set up your phone so that they get a message from you asking them to back off, and then hangs up on them without allowing them to leave you a message!  There are lots of other bells and whistles too.

What does that have to do with 4INFO?  Well, YouMail can send you a text message when somebody has left you a voicemail.  We're helping out with that piece, and throwing some advertising on the message at the same time, which lets YouMail keep the service free.  Mashable wrote a bit about it yesterday, as did IntoMobile.  Although people tend to dislike advertising, they do like getting stuff for free, and if the ad is for something they want - well, that's just frosting on the cake of this cool service.

4INFO Announces New Mobile Web Search

4INFO announced today from the Digital Experience event at the Consumer Electronics Show, the launch of its highly anticipated mobile web search engine (http://m.4info.net). Created to deliver instant, accurate results to searchers in as little as one click, 4INFO’s new mobile web search engine gives anyone with a mobile device a simple, free and satisfying way to search for information while on the go. 4INFO will be demonstrating its new mobile web search engine at Digital Experience from 7:00 to 10:00 PM on Sunday, January 7th, 2007.

The new mobile web search engine offers customers the ability to search for information in the way that’s easiest and most comfortable for them --- via an intuitive menu of the most frequent searches or via a traditional search bar. The new 4INFO mobile search engine gives users a single source for direct answers to their queries, eliminating the need to click through numerous web pages for a simple answer.

“Until now searching for information using the mobile web has been a frustrating experience for a majority of people,” said CEO of 4INFO, Zaw Thet. “4INFO’s new mobile search engine eliminates the frustrations related to mobile web search – from multiple keystrokes, to slow download times. With the launch of our mobile search engine, 4INFO further establishes its position as the reliable leader in mobile search and gives customers yet another way to get accurate answers and real results from their mobile devices.”

The Best User Experience: Fewer Key Strokes
While the mobile content universe continues to expand and users are eager to access information from their phones, finding the right information in a timely fashion has proven to be tedious.  4INFO set out to eliminate these challenges by creating a single click “entry” for users who wish to browse the mobile Internet rather than type in a query. As part of the process, 4INFO conducted a series of rigorous tests using the Rapid Iterative Testing and Evaluation methodology, which identified and refined the new intuitive search process.

Methodology: Delivering Accurate Answers
4INFO’s engine, which was built exclusively for mobile, does a semantic analysis of each query and matches it against relevant, focused categories of real-time information most relevant for the mobile user. Unlike web search, the success of mobile search depends on the delivery of accurate answers in the fewest possible steps. 4INFO will always send an answer or instructions on how to better format a query. Because users can find all of their desired information from 4INFO’s mobile site, there is no need to bookmark several different sites.

4INFO and USA TODAY Expand Partnership

Usat_logo_1 In January, we announced our print partnership with Gannett and USA TODAY, and today we're excited to formally introduce our expansion into USA TODAY's web site and mobile WAP site.  Now 4INFO's sports alert products will also be promoted via USATODAY.com and the USATODAY.com Mobile site. To access the service, on the Web visit http://www.usatoday.com/sports and click on "Mobile NFL Alerts." On a mobile device, visit and bookmark USATODAY.com and click "Sports."

Users can register for real-time NFL scores statistics via USATODAY.com and can choose from team and/or player alerts. Upon registration, subscribers initiate a simple confirmation process that sends a text message to the registered mobile phone. Replying to the confirmation text message will activate the desired NFL alerts.  In addition, alert preferences can be continually managed throughout the season via an online interface which allows for the addition of several settings that can be toggled on and off, including alerts for score changes and player statistic changes, such as scoring, yardage gained, turnovers, injuries, and more.

"Due to the success that we've seen by promoting this partnership in print, based on feedback from USA TODAY's readers and our incredible month over month usage increases, it made sense to expand our reach to USATODAY.com and the USATODAY.com Mobile site," said Zaw Thet, CEO of 4INFO.

"We are pleased to offer this new information service to our users," said Matt Jones, Director of Mobile Products. "Teaching more of our readers how to easily get the information they need, in real-time, will continue to be the focus for both companies."

4INFO Launches Open Platform

Demologo

Last month we annouced that 4INFO would be presenting at the prestigious DEMOfall conference!  After much anticipation, we can finally announce the cutting-edge technology that will be presented tomorrow.  4INFO has created Open Platform, an easy and free way for any company or individual to create a mobile service.  A first for the mobile industry, Open Platform allows developers, content owners, and individuals to leverage 4INFO's search infrastructure to make information and applications of their choosing accessible on 4INFO's SMS and WAP search platform by anyone with a cell phone.  Learn more about the Open Platform at http://open.4info.net. Or, download the press release here.

4info_open_platform_2

Open Platform features the ability to designate content as searchable, create text alerts for updated news, offer menu-driven information, and more. This search or alerts service can either be an extension of online content or a brand new application.  Developers, content owners, and even individuals can integrate with the Open Platform using open standards such as RSS or XML feeds to avoid the cost and time required to build a proprietary mobile delivery platform.  Open Platform delivers all the benefits of 4INFO's infrastructure, including the administrative features, interactivity, alerts, and personalization, minus the hassle of dealing with billing, subscriber management, and setting up a shortcode.

"People use blogs and Web sites to get information, but they can't be in front of their computers constantly.  Giving them access to the same information on their cell phones that they could previously only get online is incredibly valuable," said Chris Shipley, executive producer of DEMOfall. "4INFO's platform provides this value free to anyone with a data feed."

"Building a mobile platform is complicated and costly.  With Open Platform, 4INFO has removed the barrier for companies and individuals who have a pressing need to make their content mobile, but who can't afford to build it themselves," said Zaw Thet, CEO of 4INFO.  "Making it easy to use the Open Platform with standard web services will extend the breadth of 4INFO's already robust mobile search and alert service, making 4INFO even more valuable to our users and the mobile community."

TV Guide & 4INFO Bring TV Listings to Cell Phones

Header_logo_2 TV Guide and 4INFO announced today that they have partnered to bring TV listings direct to cell phones. Resulting from this partnership and available immediately, cell phone users will now have the ability to quickly search for channel listings, specific television programming listings, and time-based programming from any mobile phone via SMS or WAP. The service is available to all mobile phone users regardless of carrier, and will allow TV fans to easily locate air dates, times, and channels for their favorite programming while out of town, or just on the go.

The TV Guide mobile product allows viewers to look up television channels and show times based on regional or local service providers. The reply to an initial query uses 4INFO's menu-based system to help a user select from a list of television service providers generated by the initial stated location. This location is then used as a default for subsequent searches. Once a provider has been selected, program matches are returned with airdate and channel. Specific programs can be searched further to locate future airdates. For channel searches, the local channel number is displayed for a given call sign and location.

For television show time and channel information, use:

  • "tv" + SHOW + LOCATION (city or Zip)
  • Example query: "tv project runway 94107"

To identify a channel number for a particular network, use:

  • "tv" + NETWORK SIGN + LOCATION (city or Zip)
  • Example query: "tv cbs 94107"

"At TV Guide, we understand just how passionate fans are about their television shows," said Rich Cusick, senior vice president and general manager, Digital Media, Gemstar-TV Guide International. "With this new listings offering, TV Guide and 4INFO are providing consumers unprecedented ease of access to the information they want and need about their favorite shows, wherever and whenever. 4INFO is revolutionizing the feature set available to cell phone users and is an ideal partner to help extend the reach of the TV Guide brand in the increasingly popular wireless content market."

4INFO + Mission Movers = Community-based SMS

4INFO announced today a partnership with Mission Movers Group, a marketing innovation firm, to provide The Rainier Chamber with the first community controlled text messaging system.  This innovative use of an RSS feed and keyword control over SMS will allow community organizations, businesses, and service providers to distribute their content, programs, and promotions to residents within the community via mobile devices.

The Rainier Valley, in the heart of Seattle, is one of the most diverse, integrated communities in the U.S., with 100 known languages spoken in its small geographic area.  Many people comprising the community are without consistent means to Internet connectivity, but have ready access to cell phones and SMS.  This community network allows the members of the Rainier Valley to access valuable information that is constantly updated by members of the community itself, such as tutoring services, sports scores, coupons, merchant discounts, and more.  To view information for Rainier Valley, users simply text “rvp” and a query, such as “rvp tutor” or “rvp meeting” to 4INFO (44636) on a cell phone. Results are sent back immediately and free of charge.

“4INFO’s mission is to bridge the gap between information and the mobile individual,” said Carol Chi, 4INFO’s Marketing Manager. “Our expertise is to provide individuals with an easy and effective way to search for information on their phones. Because our platform allows for an elegant SMS integration and can be deployed for a number of different businesses, we can also help individuals connect to each other and bring a community closer together.”

“Mission Movers Group is proud to partner with 4INFO and The Rainier Chamber to pioneer a modern method of not only accessing community-level information on the go, but also revitalizing a community in the process,” said Brian Bigelow, Mission Movers Group’s VP of Project Development.  “We hope to duplicate this successful model with other communities throughout the country.”

Any organization that would like to make their content accessible on a mobile platform can send an email to partners@4INFO.net.  4INFO’s services are available free of charge on all major U.S. cell phone carriers, although normal carrier charges may apply. No registration is required.

4INFO, Gannett & the USA TODAY Partnership

Logo_usatoday

Gannett, the US's largest newspaper group with 99 daily newspapers and a combined daily circulation of 7.6 million, has today announced a minority investment and marketing deal with 4INFO.

As you may recall, 4INFO ran a 2 week trial in the USA TODAY, Gannett’s flagship publication, back in October of 2005. That trial was one of the largest print distributions for a shortcode due to the paper's large reader circulation. The success of that trial has resulted in this more formal partnership.

4INFO will, once again, receive placement in relevant sections of the USA TODAY such as Sports, Weather and Finance, to name a few. These placements will advertise the ability to get real-time information for the respective 4INFO search categories via our shortcode, 44636. The workings of the deal include distribution across much of Gannett’s newspaper and broadcast companies for the term of 3 years.

In our eyes, this validates the growth and potential of the mobile search industry as a viable channel for distributing information. The combination of the two companies rounds out the means by which a person can get the information they need on a daily basis. The USA TODAY is the preeminent sources of information about the world, while 4INFO is the vehicle for delivery of real-time information specific to an individual's world.
