Text message content, more than just an ad
The Wall Street Journal did a nice little write-up on text message advertising and 4INFO yesterday. It's been interesting watching the commentary on the piece and on mobile advertising in general. It seems to me that the number one criticism of the concept is that "people don't want advertising on their phones." Well, yeah! Does anybody really want advertising, ever?
Yes, I know the business school basics - people want advertising when it's relevant or when they're seeking information. But most of the time, I think most of us would prefer an ad-free world. But that's the beauty of 4INFO. You aren't signing up to get ads on your cell phone, bugging you to go buy this or that. People are signing up to get information that they ACTUALLY want (like the score of the Giants game, right as it ends!), delivered automatically by text message, for free. If that comes with line of advertising, so be it. Everbody understands that you don't get something for nothing. The services that 4INFO provides are valued by our users, and that's what gives advertisers the opportunity to reach those users with relevant sponsorships, promotions and offers. (You know I'd get back to that business school stuff eventually.) In the end it's a win-win.
Since I used the word "free", I'd better remind everyone that "standard text messaging charges may apply." In other words, your carrier might charge you to get text messages, even though 4INFO doesn't charge you for the service. So watch out for that.
Happy texting!
